Sun, Shades, Sports and Sobriety (well one of those might be a fib) 😉

Four days since my last blog and trying to remember what happened as all days are starting to roll into one big blur. If it wasn’t for work I really would never know what day of the week it was.

Turboed on Wednesday, ran with my son on Thursday, did a beautiful hilly bike ride on Friday (piccy below), ran again today or I should say I went weaving as there too many people out and I had to keep jumping into hedges to social distance. I will not be running that particular route again and accept that was a mistake. We also all did a few gym circuits in the garden in between somewhere.

Beautiful views out on the bike

Despite how it sounds however, I feel like I’m not doing much at the moment and on this beautiful sunny Easter weekend I don’t remember the last time I felt this lazy, this relaxed and did so little. I think its good for me though. I feel like I’m going into holiday mode where life slows down, you take longer to get up, do everything at a slower pace and generally feel more chilled out.

I asked my son to make biscuits for us the other day to keep him occupied not realising they were extremely complex and it took him 3 hours to bake. Results were good though, nom.

It was like Great British Bake off in the kitchen

We played ready steady cook yesterday as a family. Everyone had to look at what was in the fridge, freezer and cupboards and then write their idea down for a recipe for tea on a bit of paper. We then looked at the options and chose one to make, only we had all written down a type of curry so its clear what we all love in this house then.

Finished my painting today hurrah. Here it is, I’ve just spent too much money on a lovely frame but it will be worth it and we can hang it in the bedroom or lounge. Spent another hour teaching my son to paint a picture after he asked me to show him how. I’ll post that when he finishes it.

Finished picture – Puerto Pollensa….with I was there

It feels like such a weird time. We are all getting those jobs done around the house and in the garden (if you are lucky to have one), taking up hobbies we haven’t done in ages, baking loads, whatsapping neighbours, sharing tomato plants and making videos of talking garden ornaments in the greenhouse (enough said). These are all the upsides of lockdown or maybe its the crazy side. Anyone else feel this shift?

Week 9/10 Training

This last week should of been week 9 of my 40 week Ironman training plan and would of included 10 hours of training, 4.75 cycling, 1.5 swimming, 2.75 running and 1 hour doing strength work. However, its becoming increasingly clear that I wont be resigning up to the Ironman this year since I fear even a reduced form of lockdown may last quite a long time. I mean who knows but it does seem we are unlikely to go back to normal anytime soon.

So for the above reason I’m in no mans land a bit….how much training should I do? Am I sticking to my schedule? What would be the point? Or should I just do a reduced version to stay fit and then resurge with it all next year. Or should I plan some new goals like working on my strength and speed. Hmmm 🤔. These are things I need to think about and have yet to decide on.

Last week I actually did 7.5 hours of training, 2.5 hours of cycling, zero swimming, 2 hours of running and 3 hours of strength work. Lockdown simply lends itself to a different split in what you do. Oh I should add 1 hour of baking and several hours of eating the results of said baking….oh and an hour on my painting. It’s a work in progress, I need to spend more time on it and sort out the perspective which is def. wonky at the moment.

Not yet finished painting of Puerto Pollença

On Sunday I was on the turbo outside which is a lovely place to do this as it gets very very hot on the turbo. If you’ve never been on one, then expect to sweat/drip onto the floor. No really! So being outside you can avoid this mishap.

However, as you can see from the picture I was not very happy. This was because my temporary tooth had fallen out and I was in a lot of pain, so here is mad happy husband vs less happy in pain me.

One of those woohoo loving it sessions
One of those just get through it sessions

Monday was my rest day so no training at all but we went for a walk after work. We are so lucky around here as its easy to socially distance. I feel sorry for people in densely populated areas as they probably think they are the only ones going out for a walk and nope there are loads of others and its impossible to meet the guidelines then. All we meet on our walks are cows and horses.

Lucky to have this sort of view so close by

Today was my busy training day. I turboed at lunch, ran after work and followed it up with circuits with the lads at home in the garden. I felt good on the bike, rubbish on the run and spent the duration of the circuits fantasising about eating fajitas (what we are having for tea). I will admit food does motivate me at times 😂

Excited!!!

I started my day so so excited 😀. It was my turn to make the drive to Tesco to do the weekly food shop!!!! Ok, it doesn’t sound exciting but life has changed somewhat. Just being able to drive and listen to the radio was awesome enough but I felt like i was going on some kind of out of body experience adventure, queuing up 2 metres apart with a scarf around my mouth. The actual shopping experience was like playing a game of bingo waiting for your numbers to come up, will they have it in or wont they? One customer was wearing a mask (fair enough) but also decided to do the outing in his slippers.

I saw more of this casual dress sense on my long run today. I was running past a local Tesco express and was somewhat bemused when I saw a ‘household’ queuing in their onesies and dressing gowns. Clearly I’m overdressing when I go out by wearing Jeans 🤔. Felt great on my run; when you train you have great sessions/days or even weeks and rubbish days or weeks and sometimes there seems to be no rational reason why. This week has been great and I’ve found it hard to not sprint it out on every run and bike ride. I hope my legs forgive me.

The next bit of excitement in my day was having a temporary filling done by my husband. A colleague told me you can get your own kits (who’d of known eh). You get the mixture, a spatula and a little mirror and everything. I’ve always been an oddball and love going to the dentist, so the thought of lying back in our recliner chair whilst he fixed the whole in my teeth was very relaxing. Clearly he should start a new job as a dentist as he did a great job and I look forward to making it through isolation without further pain. 😁

PB, PT and PS

Whoop whoop whoop… PB 😁. I did my up and over bike loop which normally takes me an hour in 55 minutes hurrah, so excited 😝. I feel like this is going to become a weekly task now…how can I shave off more seconds each week…hmmm

I know this looks like me showing off but it’s really just that I was just that happy woohooooooooooo weee

Followed the bike ride up with a lovely hour of Personal Training with Emma via Zoom. I love getting stronger with each session. I really couldn’t do a single press up a few years ago. It does kind of get addictive. I still hate barbell pushes though. I love the boxing warm ups but sometimes wish that hubby and I could actually spar rather than use pads…I mean how much fun would that be

Followed our workout with an amazing curry from a local takeaway which brings me to my PS…………….. I highly recommend Sambhar Paneer curry, totally delicious 👌

I miss…….

Being able to go for a walk (rather than choosing running or cycling or walking)
Messing about on trains with hubs
Being able to dress up
Cycling in Mallorca
Getting blotto down the pub

My family, my friends, my colleagues, going to the local cafe for breakfast, going to the theatre and biscuits (cus we just ran out)……

What do you miss?

Motivation

Anyone remember record breakers tune? Motivation, Motivation, ……..Motivation that’s what I need, if you want to prevent a frown, want to survive this lockdown,……yes motivation is what you neeeeeeddddd…la la la

So the last couple of days mine has been waning a tad, well a lot actually. I’ve gone from someone that always made an effort to look nice for work, getting up early to do a workout before work, to rolling out of bed, pulling on my joggers and sitting down to my work desk in the same clothes with messy hair, no makeup and definitely no pre work workout. I’ve started to notice my energy levels dropping and a loss in interest in my beloved sport and my favourite tv shows. Levels of biscuit eating have increased exponentially and I’m definitely having far too many coffees. I mean what next eh 😂

So today I decided that the only way to find motivation was to kick myself up the backside and force myself to shower, change and make myself look nice/ready for the day. At lunch I went for a run; just a 2 miler but its a lovely 2 mile trail run straight uphill and down again.

Mid afternoon I spotted this bird on the lamppost outside preening itself. I decided to take a picture and if it appears again tomorrow I might even name it. Not sure of a good name for a pigeon? Percy?

After work I got on the turbo for 35 minutes and followed this up with a 30 minute gym workout with my son in the garden, focussing on forearms (something he wants to work on). We also enjoyed some entertainment whilst gardening, apparently we have an extra from Dr Who living in the garden:

Exterminate……

End of a weary, very weird and yet positive week

I sacked off my bike ride this morning for a laze about do nothing for a few hours start to the day instead. I will admit I felt really weary and sometimes you just need to sit still 😝.

I spent the next hour or so working as I’ve realised recently that whilst working at home has its upsides (fetching cappuccinos from the kitchen, putting your laundry on at lunch), the downsides include speed of working remotely and this ultimately means you need to extend your working day or week in order to keep on top of things. Ah well every silver lining and all that.

Hubby and I then did circuits with our lads in the garden and maybe pushed them a bit too hard whoops 😬

Otherwise in the week what was weird…….well what isn’t weird really? The new way of shopping metres apart on crosses, only going outside once a day for exercise or for your necessary shop, not visiting your loved ones, chatting to friends online, working out online, doing most things online really. It’s odd how quickly this is all becoming the norm. I wonder if we will all continue with these things when we are allowed out again to roam, party and socialise.

I’ve found myself addicted to reading jokes on ‘spread the cheer whilst corona is here’ on facebook, laughing like an insane person at the silliest things. Good tv is becoming increasingly difficult to find or perhaps I’m just becoming fussier, gaming seems to be my new hobby of the moment. Happy to receive recommendations for good tv to watch by the way.

We put our teddy in the window following a note on facebook and a WA group that the kids are going on a bear hunt counting teddies (how cute).

Even teddy looks like he misses going outside

So the positives…well I managed 4 runs this week (yes on different days), 3 circuit/gym style workouts in the back garden and 1 bike ride. I am amazed at how much community spirit I see on various groups on facebook and our local neighbours, we are cooking more as a family, spending more time together as a family and the “kids” are helping out more around the house.

So I wonder what this next week will bring…

Week 8 of training

Ok so I’ve pulled out of the Ironman for this year for obvious reasons but I’m continuing to train, be it on a somewhat reduced basis. Yesterday i went for a gorgeous bike ride through Marple Bridge and Charlesworth. I didn’t stop to take a picture as I was trying to get a pb for the entire loop. I managed it woohoo, reducing my time from 1hour and 1 minute to 1 hour 😂.

My only other activity yesterday was playing pseudo personal trainer to my son and step son as they trained in the back garden. We set up circuits, 3 stations in each circuit, 45 seconds on each station and 3 reps. Here they are, one doing wall sits and the other bicep curls. Well done lads.🙌

Having a laugh
Working hard

Heart warming

Just come inside following the mutual clapping supporting/thanking the NHS for all their hard work. All the neighbours were out clapping, all very heart warming stuff.

Today was a positive day in so many ways. I went out early this morning to the corner shop and everybody was observing the social distancing as well as being very polite, good to see. When I got home i went to ‘work’ which is basically the spare room upstairs now. I looked through my window and saw a family across the road (sorry not snooping honestly) doing their daily exercise routine presumably in front of the tv. It’s so lovely that families are doing this and spending quality time together, good for them.

This afternoon I did a 5 mile run with my son along the canal, the sun was shining and i felts so lucky to be able to go outside, I realise how much we take our basic freedom for granted. I hope this allowance to do one exercise outside a day lasts but I intend to appreciate it as much as possible as you never know what will happen next.

After the run my husband and I had our first virtual personal training session. This was quite good fun and we used my iPad out in the back garden. Our PT Emma chatted, demonstrated and generally encouraged us through a series of exercises.

Hubby being told to do press ups and enjoying the new matching yoga mats (ooh get us)

Is it weird that in these hard times I feel really serene? I feel I’ve been given a chance to appreciate every little thing, my husband, my family, my friends, my home, cooking, reading, enjoying music and I could go on and on. It’s time to take stock and breathe, look to what you have and look forwards with anticipation and hope.

Not a soul up here

Social distancing is easy when you can cycle up into the hills of the Peak District. Out on a bike ride with hubby on the back country roads to Hayfield and home, we barely saw anyone, just lots of sheep. In fact we momentarily had to slow down due to a lot of lost looking sheep running down one country lane in front of us aww.

Beautiful sunny skies, glorious views and breathe……..

Happy Mother’s Day to all mums, to those who are still with us and to those who are not xxx 💕

I have a skype call in a bit with my mum and my siblings. Sadly the new way to do Mother’s Day in these times. Hopefully we will have a laugh though. And my lovely son got me a card and a pile of my favourite mint chocolates. That should keep me going for a week :-).
